Tree Orders

Request A Tree

Each year we provide more than 1,000 FREE native trees to West Hartford residents thanks to our generous donors. Join our mailing list to learn when we open our next tree distribution.

Together, we’re restoring the canopy that keeps our town cooler, healthier, and more resilient.

Every year, orders open in February-March, with pick-up scheduled at our annual “Distribution Day” in late April.

These trees are completely free, easy to plant, native to our region, and carefully selected to thrive in our local environment. When you sign up, you’ll receive simple planting instructions and a protective cage to give your tree the best chance to grow strong.

Supplies are limited and reservations are first-come, first-served. By reserving your tree, you’re joining hundreds of neighbors who are helping to restore West Hartford’s canopy for future generations.

Reserve your free tree and be part of the change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can request a tree?

Any resident of West Hartford can request a free tree through our program.

Where do the trees come from?

We typically order our trees through New England Wetland Plants (NEWP), a wholesale grower of conservation-grade native plants based in Western Massachusetts.

I’d like a tree now, but your ordering period isn’t live yet. Where can I get a tree?

There are so many good options! NEWP is where we typically source our trees. North Central Conservation District has a plant/seedling sale every fall, so please join their mailing list to know when it’s open. The Native Plant Trust of Western Mass is a wonderful option, and makes a nice day trip. Earth Tones typically has a large stock of quality native trees/shrubs.

How do I best plant a potted tree?

How much does it cost?

Nothing! Thanks to our donors, grants, and volunteers, the trees are provided free of charge.

How many trees can I request?

We want to encourage as many neighbors as possible to participate, so we place a cap (typically ~3) on each household.

Where and when do I pick up my tree?

Reserved trees will be available during one “Distribution Day” in West Hartford. Exact dates, times, and location will be shared with everyone that has placed an order once details are finalized.

How do I care for my tree?

All you need to know is in the Connecticut Tree Owner’s Manual!
